This means that it is 0.9 percent more than in October 2019 Chinese steel companies, many of which are state-owned enterprises, have increased steel production to a projected record of 980 million tonnes (t) in 2020 and 2021 (this is 72 million tons more than in 2019). In the rest of the world, steel production has dropped by more than 100 million tons , with projected production being 745 million tons in 2020 . Steel demand in developing countries is expected to recover faster in 2021 than in more developed ones through investment in infrastructure. Steel demand in developed economies, excluding China, fell by -12.3% in 2020 and is expected to recover by 10.6% in 2021 It is also expected that the activity on the world steel market will increase and economic activity will be fully restored.
