Gabions are everywhere in our lives, do you know about this? They strengthen, prevent, protect and fit perfectly into the environment. Gabion systems, geosystems, though relatively recent, have entered our daily lives, but as we know, everything new is well forgotten old, but modernized.

A short history

Historians claim that gabions originated in the 17th century and were the simplest defense fortifications for warfare, collected from wicker baskets and sandbags. In the nineteenth century, builders already used gabions to strengthen the soil. And in the 21st century, it is now a high-tech product that is quickly assembled for the needs of all, without exaggeration, branches of human activity where the strength, durability and such important quality of our time as environmental protection are needed.

Where can gabions be seen?

They are everywhere. It’s just that these structures blend in with the environment so much that sometimes they don’t notice with the layman’s naked eye. The specialist will, of course, see gabions in the fortifications of steep slopes, river banks and landslides, in all types of structures such as retaining walls, road and rail protection systems, bridge supports.

Gabions are widely used in landscape design both for their intended purpose (reinforcement) and as decorative elements – benches, partitions, pots, flower beds, as well as for the construction of steps and terraces.

Why are they invisible? And why are they so sought after?

What are modern gabions?

Gabions are brilliantly simple! They are a metal frame filled with rocky or other inert material. The steel mesh that the gabions are made of gives the product high tensile strength, and the hardness of the filler stone guarantees high compressive strength. In addition to the solidity, as we can see, gabions show good aesthetics and eco-friendliness – the thin mesh is virtually invisible, and the end product looks made of natural stone, so gabions fit so perfectly into any landscape.

If a number of requirements are imposed on the metal mesh, then there is usually no question of filling. The gabions are filled with any solid inert material. This can be cobblestone or quarry stone, rounded river stone, crushed stone, and so-called glass stones – as long as they are larger than the openings in the net. Now it is clear why, among other qualities, gabion systems have affordable prices – they are made of economical materials that have an extremely long service life.

The coating of gabion metal nets protects them from harmful atmospheric influences (water, rain, snow, wind, and variable temperatures) causing corrosion. Therefore, gabions do not need serious care and will serve for many years.

Everything seems clear, but it is not so simple, otherwise there would not be such a large variety of gabions that only a specialist can handle.

What kind of gabion systems we offer

As gabion structures have penetrated all walks of life, it is natural that the requirements for decorating the yard and strengthening the dam will be different, the garden furniture of the villa and the retaining wall in the mountain need different characteristics, and the fence of a small House and rail on the city’s seafront require different technological solutions. Accordingly, the requirements are determined by the client, but it is better to assign the method of decision to specialists.

Our company Smart Metal Group has more than 10 years experience with gabion systems.

We still offer the best solution and of the whole variety: electrically welded, knitted, galvanized, box, cylindrical or green gabions, our specialists will offer the most appropriate and economical choice.
