Metals: How steel, aluminum and copper rule the world

Metals: How steel, aluminum and copper rule the world (and why it matters even to you)
When you hear the word “metals,” your first thought is, “Oh yeah, they’re all around us.” And it’s true, they are the backbone of modern civilization. If you’re reading this on your smartphone or at your laptop, driving a car or just sitting in a chair – thank steel, aluminum, copper and their lesser known but equally important brethren. Metals are not only what sparkles in the sun, but also what drives the world’s progress. Let’s take a look at what’s happening in the metals market in Europe, Russia, Iran, Turkey and the world at large so that even non-metal traders can understand why it’s so important.

Europe: a green revolution with a metallic tinge

Europe is one of the largest consumers of metals. In recent years, however, it is as if the region has been shrouded in the vapor of a “green revolution.” As European companies struggle with their carbon footprints, they are shifting their focus to low-carbon production of steel, aluminum and other metals.

– Steel: Europe is looking to replace traditional coal-fired production with electric furnaces powered by renewable energy. Bottom line: More expensive, but “cleaner.”

– Aluminum: This metal has been called the “bat” of the economy – lightweight but incredibly energy intensive to produce. European aluminum smelters have fallen on hard times due to high energy prices, especially after the energy crisis.

– Prices: In 2023, steel and aluminum prices in Europe have shown spikes due to geopolitical events, including the war in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

Conclusion: Europe wants to be environmentally friendly, but so far it has come at a cost.

Russia: a player as strong as steel, but with its own problems

Russia is a major supplier of metals, but it has to play by new rules after the sanctions.

– Aluminum: One of Russia’s trump cards is aluminum. Rusal provides a significant share of global production. However, restrictions on exports to Europe have forced it to look for new partners, particularly in Asia.

– Steel: Russian steel is still competitive due to cheap raw materials and energy. The domestic market is stable, but the export market is suffering.

– Copper and nickel: Russia is an important global player in these segments. Copper is needed for cables and electronics, while nickel is needed for electric car batteries. The country has a strong position here.

Conclusion: Russia is adapting, but its markets are diversifying because of the withdrawal of the West. Asia, Turkey and the Middle East are now the main consumers.

Iran: under sanctions but with ambitions

Iran is a treasure trove of resources that is constantly trying to break into the global market despite sanctions.

– Steel: Iran is one of the world’s top 10 steel producers. The problem is that exports are hampered by restrictions, but neighbors like Turkey and China are eager to buy.

– Copper: Iran is actively developing its copper industry. It’s the metal of the future, given the world’s shift to electric cars and renewable energy.

– Politics: Iran’s success in the metals market is always a balance between diplomacy and the market.

Conclusion: Iran is a dark horse that could surprise if its resources are freely available.

Turkey: between Europe and Asia

Turkey is a bridge not only between continents, but also between metal markets.

– Steel: Turkey is one of the largest importers of scrap and exporters of steel. The country’s construction boom is supporting domestic demand, and its geographic location makes it a key link in supply between Europe and Asia.

– Copper and aluminum: Turkey is actively developing the processing and production of aluminum and copper. The growth in construction and production of electric vehicles is strengthening demand.

Conclusion: Turkey is a strategic player that deftly balances major markets.

The world stage: what is happening globally?

The world of metal trading is driven around three key factors:

1. Energy: Metal production is an energy-intensive process. High energy prices in Europe and rising demand for green metals are shaping new supply chains.

2. Technology: Copper cables, aluminum enclosures, lithium-ion batteries – all of these will require metals, and lots of them. That means demand for copper, nickel and lithium will continue to grow.

3. Geopolitics: Sanctions, wars and trade disputes are forming new alliances. China continues to dominate, but Russia, Turkey and Iran are trying to strengthen their positions.

Why this is important to everyone?

Even if you’ve never worked with metals, they are part of your life.

– The price of copper affects the cost of your new smartphone.

– Aluminum determines how lightweight and fuel efficient your car will be.

– Nickel and lithium provide the battery life in your electric car or laptop.

Meanwhile, 2024 was a year of change and adaptation for the metals market. Let’s break down what happened:

– Copper: Demand for copper continued to grow, especially with the development of renewable energy and electric vehicles. Copper price forecasts for 2024 have been raised, with a base case price of around $9,025 per ton expected.

– Aluminum: Aluminum was also in higher demand, especially in the construction and automotive industries. Aluminum price forecasts for 2024 were also raised, with a price of about $2,425 per ton expected in the baseline scenario.

– Gold: Gold continued to be a safe haven asset amid global uncertainty. Gold price forecasts were raised and a price of around $2,600 per ounce was expected by the end of 2024.

Predictions for 2025: what’s in store for us?

So what’s in store for us in 2025? Let’s take a look at the forecasts:

– Copper: Demand for copper is expected to continue to grow, especially due to the development of electric vehicles and renewable energy. However, price fluctuations are possible due to changes in the global economy and politics.

– Aluminum: Demand for aluminum is likely to remain strong, especially in the construction and automotive industries. However, there may be price fluctuations due to changes in production capacity and demand.

– Gold: Gold is likely to remain a safe haven asset in the face of global uncertainty. However, there may be price fluctuations due to changes in the global economy and politics.

Conclusion: metals as the foundation of our world

Metals are like the quiet heroes of the economy, without which it is impossible to imagine the future. And given the struggle for the environment, energy and resources, their importance will only grow. So the next time you hear about copper or aluminum, remember: it’s not just a metal, it’s a tool for progress.

Metals continue to play a key role in our lives. From copper in wires to gold in jewelry, they surround us everywhere. Understanding their marketplace helps us better navigate the economy and make more informed decisions.

So, friends, keep an eye on the metals market – it’s not only interesting, but also useful!

Stop. Read Before You Buy Olive Oil

What is the difference between delicious olive oil from Izmir and a regular b*tch from the supermarket?

Once upon a time, olive oil was a product worthy of the gods. Today, on the shelves of stores there are bottles that look like olive oil, but inside there is a mixture of what grandma would call “fake of the century”. But don’t worry, now let’s find out what makes olive oil from Izmir region cooler than all the others and why you shouldn’t dilute it with any nonsense.

Izmir: Olive Hollywood

Izmir is like sunny California for olives. Here they grow in ideal conditions: soil, sea, air, and all this without stress. Olives, by the way, are hand-picked here (yes, yes, like jewels) so that each olive gets to the factory in perfect shape.

High quality olive oil (such as Extra Virgin) is produced strictly by cold pressing at temperatures up to 27°C, which preserves all the beneficial substances, antioxidants and natural flavor.

The oil has a light aroma of green apples, herbs and, attention, a pleasant bitterness. The bitterness is not a defect, it’s a sign that the butter is really cool and healthy. Here you can find antioxidants, vitamins, and a long-awaited ticket to the “healthy-lifestyle-club”: Izmir oil is rich in healthy fats, vitamins E and K, antioxidants (especially polyphenols), which support heart and vascular health, have anti-oxidants (especially polyphenols), which support heart and vascular health, have anti-inflammatory effect and slow down aging.

What about regular oil?

Well, imagine that you have taken olives that have already had time to crumple, lay on the ground and rot a little. Add to that high temperatures and a bit of chemistry or refining* (to increase the yield of the product) – that’s the “oil” for 5 euros. It has almost no useful substances, no taste, but a distinct aroma of disappointment.

Dilute it? Dilute it!

Now for the best part. Do you know what a producer does when he wants to make money and not work honestly? He dilutes olive oil with sunflower oil. Why? Because sunflower oil is cheap and no one will suspect it.

Result: it looks like the bottle is in the kitchen, and it says “olive oil”, but there is no flavor, no benefit, and in the salad as if someone spilled machine oil.

How do you know you haven’t been duped?

Here’s a checklist:

1. Price: real Extra Virgin olive oil can’t cost like a pack of butter.

2. Color: quality olive oil can be golden or green. Or golden-green. The consistency is thick. The main thing is that it should not look suspicious and should not be too liquid.

3. Taste: has a distinct, fresh aroma of green apples, almonds and a slight bitterness, which is a sign of high quality. It should smell pleasantly of fresh herbs. It is perfect for salads, sauces and even tasting with bread.

4- Label: look for the words “cold-pressed” and the name of the region, such as Izmir.

Conclusion

Olive oil from Izmir is like a ticket to business class: but you get a real high from the quality. And everything that looks suspiciously cheap, leave it for those who like diluted sensations.

Remember: good olive oil is not just a food, it is your way to gastronomic happiness. Well, or at least to a tasty salad and health benefits:)

We, being the official representative of the factory, offer the best olive oil in the world at a super price:

– Certificates? Of course! We provide all documents, certificates (including FDA) confirming the quality and origin of the oil, including the results of chemical tests.

– Price? The best! The best olive oil at a price that will pleasantly surprise you.

*Refining is the process of refining vegetable oil to remove impurities, odor, taste and color from it. This method is often used to produce inexpensive oils with a long shelf life.

SSQ http://www.ssqgroup.com/ one of the world’s leading manufacturers and exporters of unique slates from natural building materials, which are used for roofs, flooring, interior and exterior decoration of buildings. The SSQ brand was founded in the UK in 1980 and has since imported quality and natural tiles from around the world.

Shale is a rock that has formed as a result of long-term geological activity, with an average age of quality shale of 500 million years. The highest quality shales of the Phyllite category are formed in the bowels of the earth for about 600-650 million years and are characterized by exceptional strength, stability of external conditions, water resistance and unique aesthetics with unadulterated nuance. Global climate change and the deteriorating environmental situation place new and higher demands on materials related to the exterior decoration of structures, as well as on roofing materials. None of the known finishing materials can be compared to slate in terms of strength and durability. Slate, and in particular phyllite, is the only natural material that is suitable for roof buildings.

The most expensive and high quality fillet is called Rolls Roys.

Slate has a different range of colors, but the most common range is gray-black with a wide variety of shades. It is a natural and ecological material with good sound insulation and high strength. The stone is resistant to extreme temperatures, which makes it resistant in any situation.

WHERE CAN I BUY SHISTIC SLABS?

The upper shales https://shop.smartmetalgroup.com/stroitelni-materiali/shistovi-plochi-philit/shistovi-plochi-za-fasadi are mined in open pit mines by cutting the layer from the block of the deposit. The main oil shale quarries are located all over the world, the most famous quarries being in Germany, Spain and South America.

The British company SSQ has its own quarry in Argentina for the extraction of Phyllite, an elite brand of Riverstone. Characteristics of natural shale SSQ

SSQ slates have a natural color and do not contain artificial pigments, so they do not fade in strong sunlight
SSQ shales are not porous, so they are resistant to frost, as well as cycles of rain and drought.
SSQ shale is not adversely affected by a polluted or open environment (eg acid rain or air with high saline)
SSQ slates do not need technical support
The use of SSQ slate for exterior cladding of the building significantly increases the thermal insulation characteristics of the structure.
SSQ (Riverstone) slates are highly slip resistant and are often used for lining swimming pools, bathtubs and saunas.
Today, the demand for SSQ shale is growing https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=7VgUzL7Xrnk worldwide. SSQ slates are ideal for the most complex roof geometries

WHERE ARE SSQ SIXES USED ?!

Application of shale in construction and design

Slate is gaining more and more popularity in the market of finishing materials every day;
Their matte embossed surface, as well as their muted color palette, create the illusion of a natural velvety feel;
The plate is one of the few materials that meet all fashion trends in eco-style design;
Unlike other materials, slate does not need a decorative texture: polishing and other processing. The most valuable is shale in its natural texture – with a relief surface formed as a result of the division of the rock into slabs;
This exclusive material is often used in the restoration and renovation of cultural and historical buildings. It was used in the renovation of Buckingham Palace, the British History Museum, the construction of the Berlin Museum of Nazism and others.

WHAT IS CREATED FROM SHEST SLABS ?!

1 Roofs. This is the oldest application of oil shale in construction. In Europe you can find 300-400-year-old buildings with original slate roofs. It is also a traditional roofing material for historic and administrative buildings. In modern construction, slate is widely used for first-class roofing homes.

When planting a roof, a minimum slope of 22 degrees is required. The larger the slope, the less tiles are needed for installation.

2. Facade decoration. Today, slate is becoming increasingly popular for finishing the facades of urban and suburban buildings. The natural shades of this stone and its relief texture give a natural character to the buildings. 3. Wall decoration. The tile is suitable for finishing any space: from bathroom to kitchen, from bedroom to living room. 4. Improving the landscape. Slate is ideal for cladding fences, plinths, gazebos; for the construction of decorative fountains and waterfalls. The stone is organic and reliable in the decoration for barbecue and outdoor kitchen. The shape of the tiles helps to easily place them in the soil, and allows them to be used for the construction of rock gardens and alpine slides. Thick slate slabs are used for street pavements 5. Finishing fireplaces. Slate is ideal for creating a stylish fireplace. The stone is usually used for exterior decoration, as it can easily withstand high temperatures 6. Stone ridge. Natural slate is often used to create masonry “stone ridge”. Pieces of this heterogeneous, natural material are better and easier than others, fold in a “wild pattern” SMART METAL GROUP offers two of the most elite SSQ brands in Bulgaria and Romania Riverstone and Del Carmen have a unique color scheme compared to other species: Riverstone (from his own career in Argentina) – for pitched roofs – flooring and facades Del Carmen Celtas (produced in Spain – SSQ has an exclusive distribution rights to this mark) – for pitched roofs – finishing of facades SMART METAL GROUP https://shop.smartmetalgroup.com/ the official and exclusive sales representative of the British company SSQ http://www.ssqgroup.com/, offers theoretical and practical support on various technical issues: – consultation on the specification: provision of a detailed sketch with calculation of the amount of material, size and thickness of the tiles – Recommendations for choosing the shape of slate tiles and subsequent installation of tiles with standard, special or free form. Shale plates in cooking

SmartMetalGroup receives exclusive rights to offer the products of the British company SSQ in Bulgaria. https://shop.smartmetalgroup.com/zadoma/posuda-ot-kamyk

The British company SSQ https://www.ssqgroup.com/about/about-ssq has been the market leader in the UK for 40 years. The company is one of the largest European producers of a unique natural material – slate slabs.

Slate slabs as tableware

Serving food on slate plates in restaurants, as well as in the kitchen in general, has been popular for a long time. It is the dark color of the plates that makes the placement of food on them so ethereal. The color makes the food stand out, making it visually more attractive and vibrant. Because of the contrast they create, the tiles are a creative substitute for white dishes. Serving food in slate is a modern solution. For a long time, leading chefs in European restaurants have been trying to find new, creative and modern ways to serve food. Previously, slate was used more often for cheese boards than for plates. In fine restaurants, it often relies on slate boards as a substitute for white and wood.

Why use slate as an alternative to serving food in restaurants?

Slate maintains its temperature for a long time. If you put a slate board in the refrigerator, it will keep its temperature low for a long time after it is removed. In this way, the properties of the food that will be placed on the plate will be preserved for a longer time.

The plate is great for serving both cold desserts and hot dishes. It is not recommended to use a slate board for food containing sauces, as the sauce may leak from the board and spoil the dish.

As a rule, black is the best choice to emphasize the visual qualities of food.

How to create a masterpiece with the help of slate slabs?

The first thing you need to do is choose a good color combination between the dish and the dish itself. It is important that the food stands out. Our company – SMART METAL GROUP offers an excellent solution to the problem – slate slabs of the brand SSQ Del Carmen. We offer slate containers in different colors, sizes and shapes.

Interesting fact: Shale tiles are not only used in cooking, but also in jewelry and in everyday life! Many of our customers use slate as candlesticks because they are fire resistant and there is no risk of ignition. If wax is spilled on the hob, it will peel off immediately.

SMART METAL GROUP offers slate slabs of the brand SSQ Del Carmen and SSQ Riverstone and for now we have available slate slabs SSQ Del Carmen with dimensions 40×25 cm https://shop.smartmetalgroup.com/zadoma/posuda-ot-kamyk. SMART METAL GROUP can deliver on request the other types offered by SSQ //www.ssqgroup.com/roofing-slate/.

Each of your orders will be processed with an individual approach.

copper wire

Interesting facts about copper

Today we will tell you about one of the most interesting metals from a chemical and practical point of view. From the Neolithic and Stone Ages, copper has had a huge impact on the development of human civilization. Although the exact time of this discovery will probably never be known, it is believed to have been around 8000 BC. People have used this material as a substitute for stone. From it they made hammers and knives, and later other household items. Punching hardens the copper so that more durable edges are obtained; the bright reddish color of the metal and its durability make it very valuable.

5 interesting facts about copper:

  1. The Latin name of copper Cuprum comes from the name of the island of Cyprus, where as early as the third millennium BC there were copper mines.
  2. The Statue of Liberty in New York is made in part of copper. 31 tons of copper were used for its casting, while the total weight of the steel structure was 125 tons.
  3. Tools made of copper or copper alloys do not generate sparks and are therefore used wherever there is a risk of explosion.
  4. In terms of world production and consumption, copper ranks third in the world after iron and aluminum.
  5. The oldest copper structure discovered by archaeologists is part of the aqueduct in the Pyramid of Cheops. These copper pipes were installed more than five thousand years ago and are still in working order.

The coronavirus is the focus of the concerns for the global economy. Steel Market Review for January 26th – February 2nd, 2020

This time, the celebration of the Chinese New Year was overshadowed by the spread of the coronavirus and turned from a small local problem to a huge negative factor affecting the entire global economy. Depending on the situation, the consequences can be greatly increased.

China

According to analysts, the fact that the outbreak occurred shortly before the New Year holidays itself has slightly diminished its impact on the Chinese economy. After the holiday, the situation is only getting worse for now on.

Bloomberg reports that China, as a leading steel producer in the world, is currently not only fighting the spread of the virus, but is also having severe consequences affecting not only the balance of demand-supply, but also logistics and manpower in the country.

To control the situation in their economy, Chinese authorities have begun issuing force majeure certificates to their companies to protect themselves against sanctions for non-compliance with international treaties.

As you know, China has transformed its economy from export-dependent to domestic-demand oriented and is the largest importer of all commodities, including metals. In addition, the Government of the PRC has announced a course to combat the production and sale of low quality steel, and to do so, the country must eliminate obsolete production. So a sharp decline in domestic and foreign demand from China could bring down all global markets.

Experts believe that the effects of coronavirus will continue throughout March, and possibly in April this year.

East Asia

Shortly before the Chinese New Year, several large Asian companies focused on rising prices of hot-rolled coils. Now, these forecasts do not seem so obvious, and by the end of January steel products and scrap began to fall in price throughout the East Asian region. In the event of shocks on the Chinese commodity exchanges and possible fluctuations in the exchange rate of the Chinese currency, a sharp fall in these prices is possible.

Turkey

Turkey is experiencing the most serious difficulties in the Middle East, as the country has not yet overcome its own crisis and its construction industry cannot break from the bottom. At the end of 2019, Turkish companies are actively buying fittings and are now experiencing surpluses: the prices of fittings have fallen, along with the price of scrap, and demand for metal blanks has decreased.

EU

According to experts, the effects of Brexit will be quite negative for both the UK and the EU as a whole. By the end of January, the expected increase in demand for flat products has ceased and there is no reason to hope for better prospects for the European region. Moreover, the US’s intention to intensify trade negotiations with the EU after reaching an agreement with China means, in practice, further imposing its terms, and is not good for the European market.

The European Association Eurofer has already lowered its projection for increasing steel consumption in Europe by 2020 to 1.2% (compared to 1.4% at the end of 2019). The current downturn in the EU manufacturing sector is likely to continue, and according to some reports, growth is only possible in 2021, at 2.3%.

The situation in China, Brexit, trade relations with the US in 2020 may continue to worsen business sentiment in the EU, – concluded Eurofer.
