What is a Pile and where it is used?

Piles are a group of underground linear elements (pillars, columns), connected at the top by a beam grid – rostwerk or a slab (overpile slab) above which the construction is built. Piles are used mainly in deep foundation. This type of foundation is applied in deep laying bearing ground layers. The loads are transmitted on the soil trough intermediate elements (columns, pillars etc) that go trough the weak soil layers without the need of any deep excavation. While weak soils are usually unstable and often contain ground water, the lack of deep excavation saves the expensive support and waterproofing. Deep Pile foundation is typical for tall buildings, road facilities, machinery foundation and construction around or into waters.

Types of Piles

We can classify piles according to different signs: material, load transmission method, way of execution. According to the material Piles are divided into timber piles, concrete piles, reinforced concrete piles, steel piles. We differ end bearing and friction piles depending on the way of transmission of the loads onto the constructive soil. End bearing Piles pass trough the soil and stand on load-bearing soil layer through its pointy ends. Friction piles don’t reach strong soil layers and they transmit the loads from the building into the weak soil layers thanks to the friction between their surface and those layers. Depending on the way the piles are executed there are precast and cast-in-situ.

Precast Steel piles

Steel precast piles are made of steel pipes with longitudinal or spiraled welding seam and rolled steel rods. Pipe piles have a diameter of 70-80cm and a length of 50-60m. They are usually filled with concrete after they are inserted into the soil. They are suitable to be applied in dense soils e.g. large-gravel, shingly sand and other similar types where using piles made of other materials may be challenging. Another reason for their use is that in case of nearby buildings all types of soil shocks must be avoided.

Precast Reinforced Concrete Piles

The Precast Reinforced Concrete Piles have a circular, a square or a polygonal section. They may be solid or hollow. When made in square shape, Precast Reinforced Concrete Piles have sides of up to 40/40 cm but in case of a circular section the diameter can reach 60cm. When hollow, the minimal thickness of the Pile wall is 6-8cm. Their length may reach 60m but due to transportation precautions they don’t exceed 20-25m. The solid Precast Reinforced Concrete Piles end with a steel tip. Hollow Precast Reinforced Concrete Piles may not have a steel tip – open-end or with an additionally added tip (depending on the insertion technology). The loads from the building are transmitted through overpile slab or grid – monolithic or precast rostwerk. A rostwerk may not be executed in buildings with a skeletal supporting construction as each column steps on a group of piles through an overpile “hat”.

Cast-in-situ Piles

Cast-in-situ Piles are made of concrete or reinforced concrete in an in-situ made hole when applying precast piles is impossible or inconvenient for one reason or another. The multiple ways of execution can be systematized in three main groups: piles with no jack pipe, piles with a jack pipe that is removed after concrete pouring or piles with jack pipe that is not removed after concrete pouring. In all cases digging the hole, tube insertion, installation of the reinforcement cage, pouring the concrete and tube removal is fully mechanized.
