What does the hot dip galvanizing process involve?
Hot-dip galvanizing is a process of coating iron and steel elements with zinc, which forms an alloy by immersing the metal in a bath of molten zinc at a temperature of about 400 ° C. When exposed to atmospheric conditions, zinc reacts with air and subsequently with carbon dioxide to form zinc carbonate, usually gray in color, which is a relatively strong material that protects the steel beneath it from future corrosion.
Galvanized steel is used in corrosive environments instead of expensive stainless steel.
Like all other corrosion protection systems, galvanizing protects steel by acting as a barrier between steel and the atmosphere. In addition, zinc is a more active metal than steel. This is a unique feature of galvanizing, which actually means that when the galvanized coating is damaged and the steel is exposed to the atmosphere, zinc continues to protect the steel through galvanic corrosion.
The hot dip galvanizing process includes:
- cleaning the steel by using a caustic solution to remove various greases, dust and paint on the steel surface;
- washing the caustic solution;
- the steel is soaked in an acid solution to remove metal flakes and particles;
- wash off the acid solution;
- the steel is coated with zinc ammonium chloride to achieve oxidation before exposing the steel to atmospheric conditions. This pouring helps to bind zinc to the steel;
- the steel is immersed in a bath of molten zinc and kept there until the temperature of the steel equals that of molten zinc;
- the steel is cooled in a closed vessel to prevent unwanted reactions of the coating with the atmosphere.
