INSTALLATION OF GEOCELLS

stretched geocells

What is the Geocell and when is it used?

Geocell is a geosynthetic material capable of reliably fixing aggregates (soil, concrete, quartz sand). The geogrid segments are light. They are easy to transport and small areas can even be moved by hand.

Why is it useful to use geocells to reinforce bevels and slopes?

The main reason why it is suitable and appropriate for use is explained by the fact that they consist of a geosynthetic high-strength material that does not rot. It is made of raw polypropylene and polyesters. It looks like a honeycomb connected to each other in cell tissue. The height of the geocells can be different, depending on the complexity of the slope or slope and the task. The structure of the geotextile provides good filtering properties. Due to the optimal combination of their characteristics, geotextiles, in addition to traditional applications in road, drainage, and anti-erosion structures, are widely used in the construction of roofs, foundations, drainage, land management, and more.

A wide range of standard sizes of geocells allows you to effectively solve the problems of road construction and land improvement under different conditions:

  • coverage area: from 10 to 25 sq.m.
  • strip thickness from 1.1 to 1.8 mm.
  • cell height from 50 to 300 mm.
  • cell diagonal from 15 to 300 mm.
  • operating temperature range from -60 to +60 ºС.
  • color of the material – black.

On the surface of the base the volumetric geocell is fixed with polypropylene

anchors with a length of 50 to 80 cm (depending on the slope of the base, the composition of the soil, and the chosen filling material). The unit is chosen depending on the location of the slope, the presence of a nearby watercourse, climatic conditions, and many other factors.

INSTALLATION OF GEOCELLS

Stage 1. Preparatory stage

The laying of geocells is a process that does not require special skills and equipment; you may only need an anchor or a pneumatic stapler. We prepare the base on which the geocell will be laid, we clean it of stones, plants, debris, and other objects that can damage the material and make installation difficult. The next step is to lay non-woven geotextile to create drainage on the prepared surface.

The algorithm for preparing the base for the geocell varies depending on the specifics of the site:

  1. To strengthen the slopes. After checking the drawings for compliance with the geometry and characteristics of the terrain, the foot of the slope is built. It must be sealed first. The geogrid layer is then rolled out.
  2. For protection of pipelines. The soil embankment under the pipeline is additionally compacted if necessary. Geotextiles (non-woven geosynthetic material) and geotextiles were spread over it, which merged together with a blowtorch.
  3. For load-bearing structures. After the completion of the earthworks, the soil on the construction site is additionally compacted or profiled. If provided in the project, drainage is carried out. For this purpose, the finished base is lined with mandrel and only the top is stretched geogrid

Stage 2. Installation

The volumetric geocell is laid from top to bottom. At the top of the edge of the slope put fiberglass or metal anchors, not all the way. The steeper the slope, the longer the anchor should be. We stretch the geogrid along the anchors and align it around the perimeter of the module. The shape of the stretched volume lattice resembles a rectangle. The grille modules must be stretched evenly and adhere completely to the base, without cavities. To fix the geogrid, the anchors must go completely into the ground. Geogrid modules are fastened together with anchors, or self-tapping screws, or a pneumatic stapler. We repair the geogrid modules in a chessboard. At least three to four anchors are used for the reliability of the fastening per square meter. Then you need to make sure that the modules are in good condition and check that all the grid modules are fully tensioned.

Important! Depending on the degree of the angle of inclination, the height of the cells of the geogrid varies

Table 1. The main condition is a stable soil

Degree of inclination (inclination) Height of the ribs, mm
40-45 200
30-40 150
10-20 100
0-10 50

Stage 3. Filling of the geocell

At the optimal size of the cage – 210×210 mm, the height of the drop of the filler material should be one meter, the filling can be done manually or with the help of bucket technology. It is recommended to fill the geogrid modules with excess from the edge of the slope to its base. If you fill the geogrid modules with concrete, pour it to the top edge of the cage and compact it, then repeat the filling. If filling with soil, fill the cells 25 – 45 mm above the edge and press. In any case, at the end of the filling, the filling level of the cells must coincide with the upper edge of the cell.
