How to lay cold asphalt?
Asphalting with ready cold mix is a fast and rational solution for any type of road sections. Laying cold asphalt requires minimal preliminary preparatory activities. As it turned out, it is not necessary to take into account the temperature conditions outside. It is essential only to estimate how much mixture you need for the site and to get the necessary materials. Clean the work area of debris and larger particles if you intend to enjoy the new flooring longer (when it comes to a temporary solution, additional preparations may be missed). Then proceed directly to filling the asphalting area with the finished mixture of cold asphalt. You need to use enough to cover the edges of the adjacent asphalt pavements. Cold asphalt is spread evenly over the entire surface and leveled, and for this purpose can be used handy materials, tools from your garden, for example. For comparison, if you are going to lay more than 4 centimeters of hot asphalt pavement, it is desirable to do this sequentially, in several stages, and after each stage, the mixture must be compacted. Asphalt compaction – what is it and why is it done?
The compaction of the newly laid asphalt is the last, but also the most important step. Then the so-called ramming is performed, which presses the new mixture of asphalt to the surface. You will best notice this compaction when the asphalt mixture reduces its volume several times. To perform this compaction, rollers or vibrating plates are usually used, which additionally heat this asphalt mixture. When working with hot asphalt, the asphalt mixture is applied in stages and in layers with a height of 4 cm, and finally mechanized ramming is applied. It is also recommended, when working with hot asphalt, to preheat the asphalting area. Once the asphalt material is evenly distributed, each of these layers is heated and compacted, and only then proceed to the laying of the next layer of asphalt until the desired height of the road surface is reached.
All this is not necessary when working with cold asphalt. Cold asphalt is laid with a recommended layer height of 2 to 3 centimeters, and compaction is done with tools for manual compaction. This is done in order to achieve a better compaction effect of the cold asphalt mixture.
